Reflection

This project taught me many different things about leadership and what it takes to be an inspiring example. I have always admired coaches that have perfected the balance between professionalism and fun. They know how to approach any given situation appropriately, and I believe that is one of the characteristics of a good leader. I had the opportunity to participate not only as a coach, but also as a teammate for the 5 on 5 Soccer Tournament. I learned that leadership doesn’t mean you have to be boring and toe the line all the time--some of the leaders I look up to the most are easy going, fun-loving but responsible people.

Taking the chance to get hands-on experience as a coach helped me further develop my own leadership skills. I got to practice managing time, money, and other resources. I also led my team with motivational thoughts and encouragement. My favorite part was figuring out our team chemistry and working together to play well and enjoy ourselves at the same time! Because another thing I learned is that an influential leader inspires those they serve to step up and become leaders as well.

I am convinced that this coaching opportunity will be a blessing to me for the rest of my life. There is constant room for improvement in developing leadership skills, and this has given me a great start to a lifelong process. I know that with continual effort, I can shape myself into a truly great leader and make a difference in other people’s lives.

“A good coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, and has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you can be.”
